For the flatpak, it relies on a runtime of gnome version 3.20 actually. When you will start an app on your current gnome 3.18, the runtime will replace the gnome-session with the 3.20 version. I don't think you could replace gdm since it's a service not an application. And if you have dependencies with systemd of a different version than the current version on you host, I don't know what it'll do ??? We need to experiment to have a better understanding of those new package format.
