It's impossible for designers to keep track of every single symbol used in
known history. New symbols emerge daily, it's as easy as taking a pencil and
draw on canvas to create new ones.
That being said, as the author of the logo I had no idea, that Israeli's
currency looks similar. Why? Why should I. Short answer: not interested in
Israel. No one's obligated to know everything, to study every single symbol in
mankind's history (which is impossible due to the before mentioned).
Ask anyone you meet on the street do they know how many currencies are there in
the world? How many will know? Much less would they know their symbols, names
or values.
Those who will want to criticize will do so even if there is no reason, just
because it's the only thing they know and enjoy. Ask how many of those who
criticize have ever achieved anything/done anything meaningful for others?

I perform many Ubuntu Gnome installations to individual and professional
end users, and I know that a part of them migrate from Windows to Ubuntu
Gnome for "political" or philosophical reasons.
Some of those people (small number) can identify this u-20aa sign, and
this will spoil the trust to GNU/Linux. I'm thinking in removing
plymouth-theme-ubuntu-gnome-logo package when tuning preinstallations.
