Francis, there are a lot of misconceptions around Ubuntu and Gnome 3. Ubuntu 11.04 will be built on Gnome 3 which is simply a major update to Gnome 2. Gnome Shell is the frontend to Gnome 3 and will not be on 11.04's CD but will be in the repository. You can use Gnome 3 without using Gnome Shell; Gnome includes things like the Nautilus file manger, gEdit text editor, Gnome Terminal, Yelp help browser, etc. Gnome Panel 3 will also be in the repository as it used upstream as Gnome 3's Fallback mode for those without suitable graphics devices or drivers. Gnome Panel 3 is not the same as Gnome Panel 2 as Gnome would like to have it resemble Gnome Shell more but it is clearly a Gnome Panel and not Gnome Shell. In other words, Unity 2D looks a lot more like Unity than Gnome Panel looks like Gnome Shell. I have Gnome Panel 3 on my Ubuntu development computer now. It is true that only Unity and Unity 2D (or alternately named Ubuntu and Ubuntu 2D) will be on Ubuntu 11.04's install CD. Also, it's not too difficult to set the Unity Launcher to neverhide. My wife uses this mode and then it's easy to see at a glance which programs are running (white triangles next to them). Unity actually is customizable, perhaps not to the extent that power users like. I'm hoping that a simple user-friendly tool will be available in 11.04 to change the settings without needing to dig around CCSM or dconf-editor. Jeremy Bicha
