I agree. The feedback on this particular change has been so overwhelimingly negative already that if any amount of discussion would result in change it would have happened already. I put a link in the bug to a blog post that describes the gconf changes neede to get the notification icon back. My advice is to consult the serenity prayer, edit your gconf, and just let it pass for this release.
