Sorry Folks - Hadn't realized where my last post would end up ! In case it's relevant, during the continuing development of Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-16 didn't work very well on any of my rigs, but a fresh install from the 8.04.1 LiveDVD rather than the 8.04.1 LiveCD, with its solitary 2.6.24-19 kernel has produced much more stable results. (As to Intrepid kernels it's probably early days, but the Alpha-4 release uses 2.6.26-5.)
