For all it's worth, I've finally decided to "install clean", and after
installing (Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS i386 desktop version) I had no problems at
all booting. I still have boot entries for the failing system, so I
should still be able to do some more tests, however I don't know for how
long because the new install is taking < 20% of disk space, so I'll wipe
old install (failing system) soon...

I suspect this bug is related to a particular software configuration I
had on the other installation, the machine is exactly the same.
