Not sure if my problem is the same -- after installing Lightning, initially, I always see the month selector part of the calendar view. If I select the mail view, that area (on the left) is blank and I cannot get rid of it. Lightning works fine on my XP machine, but on my Kubuntu box, this problem is occurring.
I have tried reinstalling to no effect.
