I have exactly the same problem. After boot the network doesn't start. I
tried:

sudo ifdown -a
sudo ifup -a

and it solved the problem, although I have been using:

sudo invoke-rc.d network restart

which also solves the problem. The annoyance is that I have to do that
after every boot. It seems that the eth0 interface doesn't get the IP
address.

Settings: Ubuntu 8.04
eth0: wired network
wlan0: dhcp ad-hoc network using ndiswrapper
firewall: firestarter
