Instead of USB problem this might actually be a general I/O problem. I'm experiencing this freeze also but for me the freeze has happened while moving a gigloads of stuff from a hdd to another or more recently, when ripping CDs to flac format.
On my computer it has nothing to do with X or the desktop environment. The machine freezed always when ripping a certain CD (I did freeze randomly with other CDs as well but this really did it) and back then I thought the cause might be flash plugin or something so I booted the machine to command line and tried to rip the CD there using abcde. Same result, computer freezes.
