Störm, I have tested your suggestion, but I don't see any improvement in the graphics performance. I restarted the X server with the changes to xorg.conf as you suggested, and glxgears still produces no more than about 420 fps. I can confirm, however, that according to the log output produced, i.e. Xorg.0.log, the acceleration switched back to XAA based acceleration.
