My specific problem of the laptop not suspending at all seems to be caused by an incompatible configuration of the hibernate script. I replaced my own version of /etc/hibernate/common.conf with edgy's version and now suspend works at least sometimes ... On other times I experience similar symptoms as described by piquadrat. The moon LED does not stop blinking and I have to power off the computer.
