It's all rather confusing to me. It's strange that information or whatever is not just carried over on an upgrade. Such as most of the time hardware remains the same. Are files being deleted and/or overwritten and why if it works? Shouldn't it check for working configurations before trying to make its own or before it modifies or deletes it? I don't know. I'm not really sure about how to look for what and where to look for what, not to mention if X doesn't start at all and your without graphical interfaces. I only know so much about command line interfaces, and its probably not enough to repair ubuntu in such cases except that sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and sudo apt- get install nvidia-glx used to work like a charm. Is there something other than xserver-xorg handling things like monitors and graphics cards now?
