It's all rather confusing to me.  It's strange that information or
whatever is not just carried over on an upgrade.  Such as most of the
time hardware remains the same.  Are files being deleted and/or
overwritten and why if it works?  Shouldn't it check for working
configurations before trying to make its own or before it modifies or
deletes it?  I don't know.  I'm not really sure about how to look for
what and where to look for what, not to mention if X doesn't start at
all and your without graphical interfaces.  I only know so much about
command line interfaces, and its probably not enough to repair ubuntu in
such cases except that sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and sudo apt-
get install nvidia-glx used to work like a charm.  Is there something
other than xserver-xorg handling things like monitors and graphics cards
now?
