I have the same problem, although not exactly the same symptoms. The 'Moon' LED blinks, xorg shuts down and the background lamp goes off. But then it doesn't suspend completly, the fan is still running and there is periodical hard disk activity (very short, about every 5 seconds). When closing and opening again the lid, the background lamp comes on again and I see a blinking cursor. Hitting the 'Fn' key has no effect, there is no way to get the laptop back to a usable state other than a hard reset.
