After setting my first line in /etc/hosts to "127.0.0.1 localhost ubuntu804.bob" I rebooted. I rebooted because I noticed that sometimes everything works even when the hosts file is changed but not after reboot. After reboot the hosts file was as above. Synaptic would not run from the menu in System/Administration. However, update-manager did run from the menu, accepted a login when pressed "Check" and ran the check. Afterwards, Synaptic then ran from the menu. Did this twice, same thing:
