Hi, I have this problem too. Sony PCG-FX340 laptop with Intel i815 1024x767 display, but 800x600 is used by default and I can't set it any higher. Previous versions of ubuntu and debian, before the new xorg autodetection changes, corectly picked 1024x768.
To be precise, I'm running debian testing, but I pretty sure it's the same problem. I have the problem with all versions of the xserver-xorg-video-intel driver I've tried: unggnu's in the previous post (http://people.ubuntu.com/~bryce/Testing/intel/hardy-i386/xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.3.1-1ubuntu1~bwh3_i386.deb) ,debian testing's, and debain unstable's, and have made sure xorg.conf is regenerated (there's nothing in it regarding resolutions.) I've attached my Xorg log.
