Another problem with my work-around using kernel 2.6.20-16-generic (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/221213/comments/18): computer goes back into Suspend if I try to Switch user after resuming from Suspend! I have to resume from Suspend again, wait a few more minutes, and then I can log into the other account. By that time, it would have been faster to use regular Shut Down and power up.
