I get the same error message while installing Ubuntu 8.04 from the alternate CD, all default settings except no internet connection and encrypted LVM:

The failing step is: Select and install software <Continue> When I press <Continue>, I have the option to retry the "Select and install software" step again, which I did. It failed again with the same message. Hardware: Acer Aspire 1640 laptop The non-alternate CDs run and install fine for 8.04 and earlier versions.
