Yes, throw it out, it has messed up a lot here. But in 2008 it is still there, and one way or another I needed it to get the binary nvidia driver to be recognised. I had hoped it would at reboot, but didn't. Then Nvidia-Settings told me to run it, and nvidia came up. nvidia-glx is what I run.
