Is it a way to check if this bug and bug #221538 are manifestations of the same problem (the symptoms are basically the same, but this one happens when the access to the file is not permitted, and the other one when the file is not found. Both started in Gutsy) and maybe merge them into one report?
Anyway, that's a huge problem for institutions who use NFS mounted /home folders (for single sign-on) like High School I'm working for.
