Converted from 7.10 to 8.04 on the release version earlier today Using
the AMD64 version of ubuntu.

I ran into this problem on an ATI690 chipset based board. It was giving
me a

ATA1.00: failed to IDENTIFY

error message. 2.6.22 still booted as normal.

Searching for this turned up a hit with the Gentoo distribution. They
suggested pci=nomsi as a kernel parameter. Adding this in fixed the
problem and allowed 2.6.24 to boot.
