@Alex, from your description you seem to be having a different problem than the original reporter; please file it as a separate bug report.
@DaveAbrahams, are you also running the 64 bit version? (Check uname -a). Also, your files didn't show a backtrace or error message - please install dbg versions of the xserver and please get a full backtrace.
