OK, this workaround does it also for me. Seems to be really only a problem of the colors. Text and background colors are the same. May be this issue is related with this one https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/203206. I've got a similar problem of missing text/fonts when booting in single-user mode.
