Same problem here on a powerbook g4. Actually you can login. But it seems that the font/text is 'invisible.'
Try blindly logging in. Type in your user name and return. Type in password and return. You should see the cursor move down several lines as you login. Once the cursor stops moving you should be logged in. Now if you enter the command 'setupcon' and enter you should see now see the text and use the console.
