I am quite new to this software too, but on the current version that I use (the one that is currently in hardy which is 5.21.92), the constant keyboard shortcut seems to work only in the scientifical mode (both arithmetic and left to right modes). On the other modes, the shortcut do not seems to be working (I guess it is willingly).
