Public bug reported:
With WoWLAN enabled on the onboard Qualcomm WCN785x (ath12k), the system never
comes back from suspend. With WoWLAN disabled, suspend/resume works normally.
Steps to reproduce:
1. sudo iw phy0 wowlan enable magic-packet
2. systemctl suspend (mem_sleep = deep)
3. Wake the machine (a magic packet over Wi-Fi does power it back on)
Expected: system resumes.
Actual: the machine powers back on but the display stays black and it never
recovers. The motherboard's DRAM and VGA Q-LEDs stay lit. It needs a hard
power-off. The persistent journal ends at "PM: suspend entry (deep)"; nothing
from the resume is logged. After the hard power-off, the next cold boot
retrains DDR5 (DRAM Q-LED for 1-2 minutes) before booting normally.
Reproduction rate:
- WoWLAN enabled: 6 of 6 suspends failed (5 with mem_sleep=deep, 1 with
mem_sleep=s2idle).
- WoWLAN disabled: S3 suspend/resume has worked daily for weeks on this
machine, including once on the same day as the failures with the same
kernel and NVIDIA driver.
- I have not separately tested a power-button wake with WoWLAN enabled, so I
can't say whether arming WoWLAN alone or waking via Wi-Fi triggers it.
pm_trace: one failed resume was run with /sys/power/pm_trace=1. The next boot
printed "PM: Magic number: 0:858:790" with no "hash matches" line, so it
was inconclusive.
Other configuration that may be relevant:
- NVIDIA open kernel module 595.99.02 is loaded (kernel tainted), with
NVreg_UseKernelSuspendNotifiers=1 and NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1;
nvidia-suspend/resume/hibernate services are disabled.
- A /usr/lib/systemd/system-sleep hook sets power/wakeup=disabled on all USB
controllers and on root ports 0000:00:02.1 and 0000:00:02.2 before suspend,
to stop spurious USB PME wakeups on this board. The Wi-Fi card sits under
00:02.1 but has its own ACPI wake device (NV00) and magic-packet wake works.
- systemd-suspend.service has SYSTEMD_SLEEP_FREEZE_USER_SESSIONS=false
(Ubuntu default drop-in).
System:
- Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS, distro kernel, no extra patches
