Just a quick update on this. I believe this is an age old issue with Ubuntu and the HWE kernels being too new to be compatible for the older userspace zfs packages that would normally ship in the main repos. Both the ZFS kernel modules and ZFS userspace packages should match to avoid these performance related issues..at least that's my theory on this problem as of now.
