Workaround:
To make the Individual launchers [Writer], [Calc], etc. available on the 
Desktop, a Widget, or Task Manager:

[Ubuntu]
If not already open on one edge of the Activities Overview [Desktop]
Press [Super] key [Usually has some form of Microsoft(r) Icon present].
The Dash task manager strip opens.
 
1. At one end or other of Task Manager strip, Click [Show Apps] 
2. Other click the application launcher [Writer], [Calc], etc., Icon 
3. Click [Pin to Dash]*
4. Click on the Icon you have placed to open the individual app.

* If wanting to open the application instead of pinning it to the dash Click: 
[New Window] or [New Document**]
** For Writer[Ubuntu Studio]
On the Task Manager strip >> 
1.  Click [Application Launcher] >> [Office] in left-hand menu.
2.  Other click the wanted application launcher Icon.
Click on 
  >> Add to Desktop
  >> Add to Panel [Widget]
  >> Add to Favorites
or
  >> Pin to Task Manager 
Click on the Icon you have placed to open the individual app.
