Nuts. The fix mentioned above only lasted for a few hours - today Nautilus search is dead again. But I do think that my adventure defines the "bug" at hand as a Tracker, not a Nautilus problem. It may also be useful to know that about the same time these problems started here, the Amarok collection indexer died - it now loops continually, tying up system resources and making the program unusable - may or may not be related.
