I confirm the issue. To me it is happening with a PCMCIA UMTS card where the card implements the modem as a USB device that gets attached to the PC by a USB interface provided by the card itself.
The thing works without ehci_hcd and does not with it. With ehci_hcd I do not even see the device from the very start.
