I was able to reproduce what Brian is reporting here. If the -dbgsym for the package is installed, gdb works and reports that it is reading from the /tmp/dbgsym path. When -dbgsym package is not installed then it fails with the 'could not find '.gnu_debugaltlink' file for ...' message
