I cant't confirm bwallum's experience with a fresh install. I did not do an update to Gutsy but face the problem with the blanking screen. My system: fglrx (ATI Radeon Mobilty X1700), GLX, Compiz Fusion. I haven't tried riverfr0zen's advice yet.
