+ (NOTE: the following problem was solved by opening the mixer, choosing
+ Edit / Preferences, checking the "AC97" and "AC97 capture" options so
+ they would display, and sliding those sliders all the way up. Apparently

  Since the ubuntu 7 upgrade, when I record (line-in -r mic, both the same) I 
can't use the full range of values up to 1.0. If the input drives harder than 
about .35 or .4, it lops off the waveform with a square to, causing full 
square-wave distortion. The input monitor looks fine, like it's using the full 
range, but the recorded track is clipped. This happens in both recording 
programs I've tried.
  - I'm using an SB Live 5.1 sound card.
  - The problem is the same whether I choose ALSA or OSS devices in the mixer, 
and the same input devices in the recording program.
  - I can record, but at a low level, being careful of the 3.5 ceiling, then 
amplify it, but this is inconvenient, and as it doesn't utilize the full 
amplitude range, I suspect it introduces distortion.
  - I can pull up tracks recorded before this problem (when I was using gentoo) 
and the tracks look and play fine, using a healthy portion of the amplitude 
range.
  - I have attached the output from lspci -vv and lspci -vvn as suggested in 
the instructions.
