@Zach - that is an interesting detail.
This might explain why I didn't see it (had kernel 5.0 together with the 
userspace of Ubuntu 19.10)
So you can switch between good/bad mode by switching host kernels between 5.3 
and others then?

Does this apply to others affected by this bug as well?
You might try to use a few kernels of [1] to try to pinpoint a specific version 
that made it start to fail.

@Rafael it seems your repro case is close, please give the kernels a try
as well as machine type i440fx vs q35 and with/without ioapic.

P.S. the odd thing is that the error seems to only occur with emulated e1000 
network which shouldn't depend too much on the kernel as I'd have expected that 
is emulated in userspace.
Anyway a check of the above if there really is a kernel dependency to all of 
this would be great.
