I am having this black screen problem from Edgy days...i couldnt boot from LiveCD/LiveUSB but i am able to upgrade without any issues. I am using Dell Inspiron 5160 with XGI Trident Volari XP5 video card. Surprised that we still keep getting this issue with each new version! To add, this black screen is not allowing to to do anything...ctrl+alt+F1 is not working nor is ctrl+alt+backspace. Adding to boot options things like "noacpi" or "nosplash" or "noapic nolapic" etc is not working. safe graphics mode doesnt work either. No way to get to terminal, so cant reconfigure xserver-xorg. And this is not just related to ATI. This is one such issue needing resolution to help fix BUG#1.
