Happens to me also, Gutsy 7.10 with nvidia 8800 GTS. Here's my workaround: When I've got the blank screen, I move my cursor to the middle of the screen where it changes from an arrow to an I-beam. Click once, enter your user name and hit enter. Click it again, enter your password, and hit enter. Gets me right back in every time. The text box is there, you just can't see it (at least in my case).
