It seems that my original bug report was flawed. I do have problems with ipw3945, but it seems I have accused nvidia unjustly. Also the problem is more related to kde than the os in itself - GNOME goes much smoother. Currently inserted ipw3945 AND ieee80211 modules in the acpi-support MODULES section, everything seems to function ok.
