I have investigated this issue on two different laptops... both with fresh installation of Gutsy. On both laptops Load_Cycle_Count gets increased by 1 about every minute, which is very bad...
Invoking 'sudo hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda" solves problem on first laptop. Load_Cycle_Count not increasing for 10 minutes! Invoking 'sudo hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda" solves problem on second laptop. Load_Cycle_Count not increasing for 10 minutes! For me this bug is not connected with laptop_mode... I don't know where in Ubuntu are default hdparm settings... but even if they are correct they do not work or are not applied... I would be more then happy to make more tests or supply additional informations... I think that everyone who can should check his Load_Cycle_Count by invoking 'smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sda | grep Load_Cycle_Count' several times for 5-10 minutes, then 'sudo hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda' and one more 'smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sda | grep Load_Cycle_Count' several times for 5-10 minutes. Hope this helps... Can someone change importance of this bug to sane level.
