"lsmod |grep fb" produces no output here. But I managed to solve the problem. The contents of /etc/usplash.conf were initially "xres=1280 yres=1024", which the laptop display can't handle. I changed that to "xres=1280 yres=800", and then had to execute "sudo update-usplash-theme usplash-theme-ubuntu", which fixed it.
