The other option I should have mentioned is that manually putting the IP
addresses of good DNS servers directly into your router often fixes the
problem (usually by unticking / unticking a box like "use ISP's DNS
Servers / use Manual DNS servers".

The reason I did not use this approach for my machines is that I usually
have no access to log into my clients DSL router, so I needed a solution
that would work on the client PC.
