(I aborted the "deactivate secure boot" dialog because I thought that I have disabled secure boot in the past) Since I have not removed the old virtualbox install, I went to the ubuntu software-center and uninstalled virtualbox, then used apt-get install virtualbox and I get: "virtualbox already up to date (5.1.6-dfsg-1~ubuntu16.04.1~ppa1)" So it seems the old virtualbox has not been overwritten with your version but kept in parallel?
