I do confirm that with kernel 2.6.22-14-generic of today's update, the sound doesn't work anymore. I'm on Dell Inspiron 1720.
With kernel 2.6.22-13-generic and method B (work around at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Gutsy_Intel_HD_Audio_Controller) it worked.
