I know it's a long read, but we're chasing the same bug and duplicating a LOT of effort. BzukTuk for example found the 4.2.0 commit 8fb55197e6... on februari 1 2016. But the problems started around 3.16 and disappear somewhere in the 4.1.x line and are reintroduced in 4.2 by 8fb55197e6..., but different. It now takes longer (sometimes days) for the freezes to occur. So many think we're actually looking at two, maybe three problems at the same time, which makes bisecting extremely difficult. Reverting 8fb55197e6... in current kernels does NOT solve the problem I know for sure (I tried) unless I made a mistake because the commit does not completely match current state of i915 driver. My apologies if I sound pedantic... I too, hope joined efforts will get this (these) bugs squashed as soon as possible, but please refrain from "me too" posts.
