** Description changed:

This is on Xubuntu Edgy, currently current, with Xorg's Composite

+ Applications that operate in fullscreen mode (e.g: gksu, xscreensaver,
BZflag) can't seem to give up the screen. Entering a password in gksu
causes the window to disappear, but the screen remains shaded and no
longer accepts normal input. (Switching to console works.) Same
symptoms for xscreensaver. BZflag acts somewhat differently - switching
to windowed mode instead of fullscreen causes the screen to go blank,
but BZflag still accepts input. (e.g: F12 to quit)

From console, killing the offending application returns the GUI to
normal. Unfortunately, this bug makes GUI administrative applications
  almost unusable.
