I found the following kernel patch in the comments of the freedesktop
ticket :

I can no longer produce the crash of my GPU with this patch.

It has the same effect as these two commands as root :

echo high > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_dpm_force_performance_level
echo performance > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_dpm_state


In my case, it seems to have worked-around the issues I am having with the 
radeon driver.
