Christopher M. Penalver (penalvch), The notepad was purchased earlier
this year and had the previous LTS version of Ubuntu (12.04?)
preinstalled.  I believe that it was in non-UEFI mode as I have not made
any changes to this (see below).  It was upgraded directly to the
current LTS release, 14.04 and it was at this point that the touchpad
stopped working.

I have just tried booting on an older version of the kernel 3.5.0-54
from the boot menu, and the touchpad still does not work.

I just tried booting in UEFI mode (by disabling legacy mode) from the
hard drive but the BIOS reports that there is no operating system on the
drive.  Re-enabled legacy mode and booted as normal but still no
touchpad.
