I am facing the same issue and I am trying to downgrade too. So here is
my original commands that broke the whole thing:

> sudo apt-get install nvidia-current-updates nvidia-settings-updates

> sudo apt-get install nvidia-current-updates-dev

Edit /etc/default/grub and add vmalloc=256m to the
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT parameter list

> sudo update-grub

Then I tried to fix the problem with:
> sudo apt-get install ubuntu-drivers-common=1:0.2.91.4 nvidia-common=1:0.2.91.4

but still does not work. dpkg -l | grep nvidia gives:

ii nvidia-304-updates 304.117-0ubuntu1
ii nvidia-304-updates-dev 304.117-0ubuntu1
ii nvidia-304-common 1:0.2.91.4
ii nvidia-current-updates 304.117-0ubuntu1
ii nvidia-current-updates-dev 304.117-0ubuntu1
-dev
ii nvidia-libopencl1-304-updates 304.117-0ubuntu1
rc nvidia-libopencl1-331-updates 331.38-0ubuntu7.1
ii nvidia-opencl-icd-304-updates 304.117-0ubuntu1
ii nvidia-settings 331.20-0ubuntu8
ii nvidia-settings-updates 331.20-0ubuntu8

Any help? Thanks a lot!
