Setting the nogpumanager parameter on boot didn't help. Symptoms same.
I tried purging everything and then installing just the nvidia-331 package 
(which installed some others together) and then rebooted (with the nogpumanager 
parameter removed) but got a "Your system is running on low graphics mode" 
message and a totally non-functional environment. Purged nvidia package and I 
am back with my system working but with my nvidia chipset unusable and probably 
also active and consuming power?
Anyway, what should I do to give you some useful debug logs?
