I have ideas but they are only more complicated and involve you finding a way to check whether the keyboard interrupts are still being delivered by looking at cat /proc/interrupts and seeing whether the number associated with the i8042 for your keyboard is rising when you press a key. I have no idea how you go about this when you have no keyboard though. USB interrupts should be a different line. It is also worth reporting whether caps lock works when this happens...
