Thanks for the suggestions - As my laptop is currently running a fresh install 
of 13.04, I'm not sure the requested information is relevant:

I have only used the official install or upgrade procedures - I have not 
manually installed or reconfigured.
In every dual-boot installation I have done I have needed to run boot-repair.
12.xx and 13.xx installations have resulted in functional systems (after 
boot-repair).
Both 14.04 upgrade and install resulted in this error.
If grub-efi needs to be installed instead of grub-pc, why is this not done by 
the installer?
