I had to boot from a 13.10 ISO and then run the following to fix this: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install -y boot-repair boot-repair &
I hadn't run a grub-install directly in the past. No UEFI. Multiple hard drives, dual boot on primary.
